If your event has food being brought in by a caterer or alcohol being served, you will need three separate insurances - no exceptions:
1. Host Event Insurance (required for every event)
This must be special event insurance (not your company’s business insurance) in the name of the event host. It must include liquor liability and list Tower Beach Club as Additional Insured.
2. Caterer Insurance (required if food is served by a vendor)
This is your caterer’s own general liability policy for food service. If they are also pouring alcohol, their insurance must include liquor liability.
3. Bartender Insurance (required if alcohol is served)
Bartenders must provide their own liability insurance with liquor liability included. Your host insurance does not replace this requirement - both insurances, both with liquor liabilty are required. The bartender works under you, but also needs his/her own insurance.
Bottom line:
We recommend using The Event Helper for your host insurance. It takes 5 minutes and costs about $100. You can purchase here: https://www.theeventhelper.com/#affXNd

Bartenders Must Provide:
Important:
If their business insurance does not meet the minimum coverage, caterers and bartenders may purchase single-day event insurance.
These are the problems and misunderstandings we see the most. Please read carefully.
General business insurance (HR firm, plumbing business, etc.) does not cover the liability involved in hosting a private event. You must purchase special event insurance specifically designed for hosting events.
Yes. Always.
Your host liquor liability covers you, the event organizer. It does not cover the actions of the bartender. Anyone pouring alcohol must have their own liquor liability insurance, even if you already purchased host insurance.
No. Their insurance must specifically include "Liquor Liability". If that is missing, the insurance will be rejected.
Yes, but only if:
If their policy only covers food service, they cannot serve alcohol unless they add or purchase liquor liability coverage.
Usually because of one of these:
They must meet the exact requirements listed above. Give them a link to this page if they are unclear on what they need.
They have two options:
Either option is acceptable.
Partially:
Because the liability for food service and alcohol service in California is significant.
These requirements protect:
This is standard for venues in San Diego.
Includes liquor liability + lists Tower Beach Club as Additional Insured.
General liability + liquor liability if they’re also serving alcohol.
Liability + liquor liability (required).
If any of these are missing, the event cannot move forward.
